Optical distance sensors

of the TMx product family

The TMx product family was developed to measure distances to liquid surfaces in explosive areas. It is particularly capable of detecting transparent liquids, such as clear coat, alcohol, solvents, and flammable liquids.

The sensor measures the spatially resolved distance to a certain area on the target object. This makes it possible to measure even on turbulent liquid surfaces and uneven surfaces of bulk materials.

The spatially resolved measurement also allows specific areas of the field of view to be excluded, for example, to ignore obstacles. For uneven surfaces, an average distance can be calculated. The spatially resolved distance data can also be used to detect the inclination of the observed surface.

Highlights

  • Distance measurement through direct time-of-flight (direct ToF)
  • Directly usable in Ex zones 1, 2, 21, 22; allowed to emit into Ex zones 0 and 20
  • Typical distance measurement up to 2 m, up to 4 m with a suitable target surface
  • Adjustable beam angle
  • Measurement output via RS-485 interface and configurable current interface 4–20 mA
  • Switching output activates when a freely configurable distance is exceeded or falls below the set threshold
  • Laser class 1
  • Infrared light
  • Explosion-proof aluminum housing
  • Protection class IP65
  • Simple configuration via menu system (RS-485) or from a control system (PLC)

Applications

  • Level measurement of bulk materials and liquids in explosive areas
  • Measurement on clear liquids such as clean water, clear coat, and solvents
  • Inclination detection when evaluating two-dimensional measurements
  • Applications in:
     - Freshwater and wastewater technology
     - Pharmaceutical industry
     - Chemical industry
     - Automotive industry

The measurement value can be read digitally via an RS-485 interface or through a 4–20 mA current interface. Additionally, the sensor has a switching output that activates at a configurable distance.

All parameters for the current interface and the switching output can be configured via the RS-485 interface.

For manual parameterization, a convenient menu system is available, which can be operated with any terminal program. It is also possible to deliver factory-preconfigured devices according to customer specifications, with the option to lock further parameterization.
